Good morning you wonderful birthday child. It's your very FIFTH birthday today. I quickly wanted to tell you all about this morning and what a cool time you had. Ugh, we had this whole thing planned about doing decoy gifts for you - wrapping up things like a pair of underpants, an onion (you really hate onions) and a packet of macaroni etc etc. Then this morning swished by too fast and we just didn't get there and we were WAY too excited about your main gift. Don't worry, we promise to be horrible to you next year.
Daddy picked up a cake for you a la Woolies (because listen you don't even care if it took me seven hours to bake you a cake and you didn't even eat and it so there) (getting super defensive about not being a domestic goddess right now) (whatever) which was super delicious. We got the sweetest candles and woke you up with songs and smiles and good vibes. You were SO HAPPY, but you were also a little bit offish.
See, you've been begging for a 'big boy' bicycle for months and reminded us at regular intervals as your birthday drew nearer. Last night I worked quite hard at convincing you that you were unfortunately NOT getting a bicycle. See, mommy and daddy went to every. single. shop. in. Cape Town and nobody has any bicycles anymore. They're all sold out! You asked if I'd checked at Gaga's shop and Granny's shop and shops far away and unfortunately my boy - there are just not any bicycles anywhere. You suggested that you come with us to the shops to see and help us find one, and I said that maybe we can some other time. You were very polite and understanding about the situation. Five year old me would have broken buildings. Hell, twenty-nine year old me would have burnt this house down.
We did get you a few little side gifts like stationery and stamps and Spider-Man apparel. You were super polite while unwrapping but you did say the hat doesn't fit (it does) and that the shoes are too small (you didn't even try them on). You were too scared to commit to them as official birthday gifts with your little heart still holding out for the bicycle. Again, you were super nice and polite but just offish. We called the birthday a 'day' and I went to get a knife to cut the cake (got camera ready around the corner) while daddy fetched your most beautiful bicycle.
I am SO happy that I got a photo of your face as you saw it. Really, I am basically now qualified to shoot for National Geographic. You bounced and jumped and ran and hopped on to that bike faster than a squirrel to a tourist. Your little legs reached just fine and we all marched outside so you could have a quick ride around the neighborhood. You rode so well!!! All the grannies called and you were super chipper about how big and strong your bike is and how much you love your bell and the brakes and how much you basically love life.
You're at school now getting loads of love and attention no doubt. We're gonna go fetch you soon and take you down to the promenade for a cycle and an ice cream. Then we'll go to Spur and we'll eat more cake and love the living rabbits out of you. You're FIVE Noah. You're AMAZING Noah. Have the most wonderful day full of songs, hugs, kisses and laughter. We love you. Happy birthday.
