Weekend Adventures - Langebaan and West Coast National Park. And flowers. Obviously.

We took a trip to the West Coast National Park near Langebaan last weekend. It is so beautiful out there, and by far the most beautiful beach that I've ever seen. The lagoon is breathtaking and looks like a tropical island. The sand is whiter than your legs at the end of winter (or mine in these pictures). Really.

I am pretty comfortable with the outdoors, but man. Have your wits about you if you take the kids. I stopped along the road to change Benjamin's nappy and I made him stand in the bush next to the car as I did so. When I closed the door, I noticed a whole like family of big hairy caterpillars right where he'd been standing. Several bees had flown in to the car which made me scream like a girl in fright and we stopped to move tortoises, look at a few zebras and there were a few ostriches in the road. I am a very anxious driver, so I was ducking all sorts of wilderness obstacles on the road. At one point while running from the car filled with bees I did sort of scream "We're in the wild!!!!!!!!" but that's a whole other blog post.

The West Coast National Park is too  beautiful, but there are no shops in there that I saw, so please pack loads of snacks and juices. Go now if you want to see millions of beautiful flowers and the flamingos at the bird hide. And then drive on to Langebaan and get fish and chips and watch a bit of kite surfing at the beachfront. It really was a perfect day. We'll definitely go back.

  1. LoL, sounds like our trip to the 'bush' a few weeks back. Awesome pics - I'm adding this to my 'place.to.visit' list ;)

  2. Love it! We used to go there almost every other weekend when I was growing up. I remember that walkway to the beach so well. And let's not forget the millions of bags(there were no shops back the either), paddle skis etc we carried down. Bonus that the water is kinda warm :-)
